Things No One Tells You About Counseling

Seeking mental health counseling is not something that needs to feel like an Earth shattering decision. It is not just something that we do when we don’t know how to do anything else and are in crisis. Counseling is a process by which I help my clients seek greater understanding of even the most mundane life events that create more discomfort than we would like.

I have people tell me that they don’t feel as though they are “that bad” implying that they have to be in a certain level of distress before they seek out support for their mental health. This has always had me a bit emotionally reactive. I do my best at holding back all of the emotions that tell me that I need to justify to them why therapy can be used as a preventative measure to help them regulate before they get “that bad.”

Friends, do yourself a favor. Reach out to a professional counselor and just talk. Don’t worry about saying the right thing, or planning out the perfect session. Just call. Say “Hi.” Allow therapy to be a calm space for you to be open and free from judgement.
